Dorothy Shrader

Teacher | Director | Arts Administrator

Dorothy Shrader has won accolades for her innovative capability to marry the artistic to the practical in her various roles within the arts. Dorothy has provided her thoughtful leadership to the Curtis Institute of Music, Opus 3 Artists, Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, cellist Joshua Roman, Westminster Choir College, Princeton University Concerts, and Bel Canto at Caramoor, among others.

Currently, Dorothy represents the classical and chamber musicians on the Opus 3 Artists roster, working as a booking agent in the eastern half of North America. At Opus 3, she is also on the internships committee, collaborating with colleagues and partners at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music to create two year-round, NYC-based opportunities and several semester-long programs for current SFCM students. Dorothy regularly travels to attend conferences and concerts throughout the country.

As Senior Director of Administration and Operations of Vocal Studies and Curtis Opera Theatre at the Curtis Institute of Music, Dorothy produced all live, fully stage opera, various workshops of opera scenes and new works, recitals and vocal chamber music performances, and two feature-length opera/films. During the 2020-2021 season, she also oversaw the production of a digital recital series, coordinating production teams across multiple countries and continents. She was responsible for negotiating and facilitating all faculty, guest artist, and vendor contracts, creating lesson, rehearsal, and coaching schedules, projecting and maintaining production and department budgets, and served on several committees including the Council for Inclusive Excellence.

The summer of 2023 marks Dorothy’s eighth season at the Ravinia Festival. Her current role as Artistic Producer for the Steans Music Institute Program for Singers includes producing six recitals and various masterclasses each summer. Working closely with Program Director, Kevin Murphy, she facilitates the schedule, printed program content, and production aspects of the RSMI performances. In previous years, she was also Artistic Coordinator for the Program for Piano and Strings.

Ms. Shrader balances an empathetic understanding of performers’ needs and a critical perspective of the business of programming and producing classical music. Her unique blend of skills and innate passion for mentoring young musicians is a natural match for the university setting, where Dorothy has recently begun to tour as a teacher, stage director and dramatic coach, and business consultant.

Dorothy is available for private coachings and consultations on repertoire, dramatic preparation, audition preparation and feedback, and creative programming as her schedule allows - please reach out using the link below!
